Why guessing your bitrate goes badly

Almost every dropped frame complaint comes from the same mistake: somebody read that Twitch supports 1080p 60fps at 6,000 kbps, set that, and never checked whether their connection could hold it. Upload speed is not a budget you get to spend entirely. Audio needs its own share, networks lose packets, and the moment anything else in the house starts using bandwidth your stream is the thing that suffers. This calculator takes your real upload speed, keeps 30 percent in reserve, subtracts the audio, and then tells you the best resolution and framerate that fits what is genuinely left.

What the numbers mean

Enter the upload figure from a speed test, not the download one. People mix these up constantly and a typical home connection has far less upload than download. Pick where you stream, because Twitch caps ingest around 6,000 kbps for channels without Partner status while Kick tolerates more headroom. Then choose your encoder. The output gives you a resolution, a framerate, a video bitrate to enter in OBS, plus audio bitrate, keyframe interval and the encoder preset settings worth using.

Framerate beats resolution for games

When your bandwidth cannot cover both, this tool chooses framerate. That is a deliberate opinion and it is the right one for game footage. A shooter at 1080p 30fps looks like a slideshow during any fast movement, while the same scene at 720p 60fps reads as smooth and legible. Viewers notice stutter far more readily than they notice a slightly softer picture, and most of them are watching on a phone or in a small window where the resolution difference barely registers anyway. Slower content is the exception. If you are doing art, cards or talk shows, 1080p 30fps is perfectly reasonable.

Picking the right encoder

If you have an NVIDIA card from the GTX 16 series or newer, use NVENC. It runs on dedicated silicon, leaves your CPU free for the game, and modern versions hold up well against software encoding. x264 on the CPU is the fallback and it works, but it needs a genuinely strong processor and it competes with whatever you are playing, which is how people end up with a beautiful stream and an unplayable game. AMD and Intel encoders are usable and have improved a lot, though both still want a little more bitrate to reach the same picture quality, which is why the calculator adjusts what it recommends when you select them.

Settings that matter beyond bitrate

Use CBR rather than variable bitrate. Live platforms want a predictable stream and CBR is what they are built around. Set your keyframe interval to 2 seconds, because both Twitch and Kick expect that and leaving it on automatic causes odd playback behaviour. Keep audio at 160 kbps, which is plenty for voice and game sound together. Match your output resolution to your canvas resolution where you can, since downscaling costs encoding work for a benefit most viewers cannot see.

Clean settings solve a different problem

Worth being clear about what this fixes. Getting your bitrate right removes a reason for people to leave. It does not give anyone a reason to arrive. Those are two separate problems and only one of them is technical. What bitrate should I use for 1080p 60fps?

Around 6,000 kbps, which is also the practical ceiling for channels without Partner status. To sustain it you want roughly 9 Mbps of real upload speed, because you should never plan to use your whole connection.

Why does the calculator only use 70 percent of my upload?

Because the rest is doing useful work. Audio needs its own slice, packet loss happens, and anything else on the network competing for bandwidth will cause dropped frames the moment you are running at the limit.

Is 720p 60fps better than 1080p 30fps?

For game footage, usually yes. Fast motion looks far worse at 30fps than it does at a slightly lower resolution, which is why this tool prefers framerate when your bandwidth cannot cover both.

Can I stream at a higher bitrate on Kick?

Kick tolerates more headroom than Twitch does for non-partners, which is why the platform dropdown changes the ceiling. It does not change the sensible bitrate for a given resolution though, so a higher cap only helps if your upload speed can genuinely support it.

Which encoder should I choose?
